The History of the 12th Arrondissement
The 12th arrondissement has a rich history, but it only became widely recognized during the Revolution. This district was where it all happened and where the famous prison was located. From the beginning, there was a good mix of tranquility and bustle, with many government buildings, including a castle, and the district gradually expanded with parks. Today, you can still see the history and visit various historical buildings to learn more about France’s past while enjoying the sights.

Attractions in the 12th Arrondissement of Paris
The 12th arrondissement is known for a large number of attractions that have been preserved over the years. Here are some of these attractions detailed further.
1. Place de la Bastille
Place de la Bastille is primarily famous due to the Revolution. Here stood the Bastille Saint-Antoine, built by Charles V between 1370 and 1382. The Bastille later became a state prison, holding various famous prisoners. During Louis XIV’s reign, anyone could end up in this prison, though they would receive a relatively luxurious cell in return. Today, the Colonne de Juillet stands in the middle of the square in memory of the victims of the July and February revolutions in 1830 and 1848, respectively. The highest gravestone can also be found here, but it is unfortunately no longer accessible to the public.
2. Opéra Bastille
The Opéra Bastille is one of Paris’s most famous opera theaters. Built in 1983 by Carlos Ott, it seats 2,700 people. The building is particularly known for its acoustics. The construction itself has garnered much fame, including the incident where the building collapsed during underground flooding. You can experience performances here, for which you only pay 5 euros, although you must stand in line for an hour and a half and stand throughout the show. It’s worth considering a visit.
3. Promenade Plantée
If you want a peaceful walk, the Promenade Plantée is a beautiful park to explore. The park, 4.5 kilometers long, is partly built on a 19th-century viaduct. The walking park takes you past various attractions, and today there is a walking promenade where you can explore the full surroundings and learn about the less touristy parts of Paris. There’s also a bike route that later merges with the walking path, ending in the Bois de Vincennes.
4. Gare de Lyon
The 12th arrondissement also hosts one of Paris’s largest stations: Gare de Lyon. From this station, you can head to Southeast France, and underground you’ll find the metro and RER station. Each year, a large number of travelers depart from this location. The building itself has been changed several times. Today, it consists of a 100-meter-long façade and a 64-meter-high tower, which, however, is not accessible to visitors. From the outside, you can admire everything, and you can always make a trip to another part of the country.
