Ten tips for booking accommodation in Paris Staying in Paris
Finding a hotel or apartment to your liking in Paris can sometimes be quite a task. There are plenty of options, but it’s difficult to assess everything from a distance, and the photos on the websites often paint too rosy a picture. Here are ten tips for finding a hotel or apartment that suits you.
- Search on booking sites that also have reviews. There you can extensively view a hotel or apartment (photos) and read the opinions of people who have been there.
- Nighttime tranquility comes from insulated walls and double-glazed windows. If you open those windows at night, you’ll still have to deal with noise. When booking a hotel, ask for a quiet room or request one upon check-in. Earplugs can help drown out a lot of noise. A room that doesn’t face the street is quieter but often has a dull view of buildings in a courtyard.
- Rooms and bathrooms in Paris are rarely spacious unless you’re willing to pay a lot. Shower spaces are small, or there’s only a shower in the bath. A bathroom with just a shower is often slightly larger.
- Standard in many French hotels and apartments is a bed that’s 140 or 160 cm wide, and not all beds are even 200 cm long. If you want ample space, ask for two separate beds (une chambre à deux lits).
- Look for accommodation near a metro station. It’s even more convenient at a junction of metro lines, for example, near the metro stations République (12th arrondissement), Montparnasse-Bienvenuë (14th arrondissement), Bastille (4th/12th), La Motte Piquet-Grenelle (15th), Place d’Italie (13th), Charles de Gaulle-Etoile or Nation (11th). Or near lines 1, 4, 7, or 8.
- If you opt for a hotel or apartment outside Paris, make sure there’s an RER station nearby so you can reach the center of Paris with just one metro ride. From some accommodations, you can only reach Paris with various forms of public transportation, which takes a lot of time and money.
- Breakfast is often included in the room rate in a hotel, but it’s usually nothing special, and you’ll be in the basement of the building. It’s nicer to have breakfast at a nearby café, and sometimes it’s even cheaper. In an apartment, you can buy your breakfast from the bakery or supermarket.
- Rent a car? Look for a hotel or apartment with a parking garage nearby (hotels list this on their website). You often get a discount on the (expensive) rate through the hotel. Forget about parking in front of the door anywhere in Paris.
- Check if the hotel or apartment has (free) WiFi. Sometimes you can only access the internet at the reception.

Bed & Breakfasts (Chambres d’Hôtes)
In recent years, Bed & Breakfasts have also emerged in Paris. If you enjoy staying in the homes of Parisians, you can choose from a simple B&B, romantic suites, rooms in a historic building, or a luxury apartment.
