7th Arrondissement of Paris

Planning a trip to Paris and want to explore the 7th arrondissement? Here’s what you need to know. The 7th arrondissement of Paris is home to many of the city’s iconic landmarks, making it an essential stop during any visit.

After some general information about the 7th arrondissement, we’ll dive into the well-known attractions. To round off, we’ll highlight three great places to stay in this district, ensuring you know exactly where to go and what to expect.

7th arrondissement

About the 7th Arrondissement of Paris

Also known as Palais-Bourbon, the 7th arrondissement covers an area of 4.1 square kilometers. It has a population of just over 54,000 people. You’ll find many official buildings and landmarks here, which is why the population is smaller compared to other districts.

Since the 17th century, many members of the French nobility have resided in this arrondissement, making it an affluent and expensive part of Paris. Like all Parisian districts, the 7th is divided into four neighborhoods, known in French as quartiers: Quartier de Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin, Quartier du Gros-Caillou, Quartier de l’École-Militaire, and Quartier des Invalides.

Landmarks in the 7th Arrondissement

There’s plenty to see in the 7th arrondissement, from famous to lesser-known sights. Notable landmarks include the Eiffel Tower, Palais Bourbon, Champ-de-Mars, and Hôtel Matignon.

1. The Eiffel Tower

The symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower, is undoubtedly one of the most visited sites in the city, if not the world. Located in the 7th arrondissement, it was built for the famous World’s Fair held in 1889. Gustave Eiffel was the engineer behind this iconic structure, which stands 330 meters tall, including its antennas.

Visitors can choose to go inside or walk around the base. Elevators take you up to the first platform and the summit, where you’ll find plenty of photos, art, and information, including boards that help identify surrounding buildings.

2. Palais Bourbon – National Assembly

The lower house of the French Parliament, the National Assembly, is also located in the 7th arrondissement. Construction began in 1722 and completed in 1728. Initially intended as a residence for the daughter of Louis XIV, it later served as a prison before housing the parliament.

3. Champ-de-Mars

Also known as the Field of Mars, this large park area borders the Eiffel Tower on one side and the Military School on the other. Named after the Roman god of war, it has been the site of numerous historic events, including a massive festival during the French Revolution in 1790 and a shooting a year later during a petition to dethrone the king. It has also been the backdrop for several major world fairs, including the one for which the Eiffel Tower was constructed.

4. Hôtel Matignon

One of the most beautiful mansions in Paris is Hôtel Matignon, built in the 18th century to designs by Jean de Courtonne. Surrounded by exquisite gardens, every head of government plants a tree here. Today, the building serves a government function.
