Attractions in Paris
The Île-de-France region consists of the city of Paris and seven surrounding departments. For some tourist destinations in Île-de-France, the RER is the recommended mode of transport. The RER (Réseau Express Régional) has 5 lines (A, B, C, D, and E) connecting the suburbs in the Île-de-France region with Paris. The Transilien trains also provide fast connections between Parisian stations and the outskirts of Paris. With these lines, you can easily reach attractions such as Disneyland, Versailles, Fontainebleau, or Rambouillet, as well as beautiful historical places like Meaux, Melun, and Provins.
Since all lines also pass through Paris, you can hop on and off in Paris. If your hotel or campsite is outside Paris, for example, in Maisons Laffitte, Disneyland, or Evry, you can easily and quickly take a day trip to Paris and back with the RER. The RER lines have fewer stops but are much faster than the regular metro. They operate from around 6:00 am in the morning until around 1:00 am at night.
Other means of transportation around Paris include the Transilien trains, regional buses, and some private transportation companies like the VEA bus.

Traveling with RER and Transilien
At the entrance, insert your ticket into a slot in the turnstile. It will come out on the other side. Take the ticket and pass through the swing doors or the turnstile. If you have a Navigo Découverte pass, hold it in front of the purple eye.
On the platform, you’ll find an illuminated board showing the stations of the line. An illuminated light for a station means that the RER stops there. Pay attention to the direction the train is going: there may be multiple endpoints.
To open the doors, press a button under the handle of the door. Inside the train, you can see which stations it stops at. When you exit an RER station, you need to pass your ticket through the slot of the turnstile again. So, make sure to keep your ticket! You also need to hold your Navigo Découverte semaine pass in front of the eye again.
Paris Public Transport Tickets
The type of ticket you need depends on the mode of transport. You can travel with a billet Origine-Destination (price by distance), a discount card (price by zones), or a separate ticket (for the TGV and the VEA bus). The billet Origine-Destination is also called ‘billet Ile-de-France’. Which ticket you can use is indicated for each destination. The prices mentioned are based on traveling with a billet Origine-Destination or a private transportation company. Those with a discount card for the mentioned zones pay nothing extra.
Billet Origine-Destination
With your ticket t+, you cannot travel on the RER outside Paris. For that, you need another ticket called ‘billet Origine-Destination’. It looks similar to a ticket t+.
The price of the ticket is determined by the distance between your departure and arrival stations. The farther, the more expensive. The zone division does not apply here. You can buy it at the ticket office or ticket machine of any metro, RER, and train station in and outside Paris.
A round-trip ticket does not exist. For a round trip, you buy 2 identical tickets, one for the outbound journey and one for the return journey (‘aller et retour’). You can also buy these tickets as a carnet (10 tickets at a time), which is 20% cheaper per ticket. Children (4 to 9 years old) get a 50% discount on single tickets or a carnet. Children up to 3 years old travel for free.
If you travel with the RER to the center of Paris, you can transfer to another metro line there with a billet Origine-Destination (not on bus or tram), as long as you stay underground. Once above ground, you need a ticket t+ for the next ride.
The billet Origine-Destination is valid on trains and buses in the Île-de-France region. This also applies to the discount cards, but there are some exceptions. These are mentioned with the different cards.
